Weekly Drum Lesson: Meet Your Metronome

Hello drummers! This video lesson is for all those who struggle to play with, or simply feel intimidated by the metronome. If you're already comfortable drumming to a click, then this video may be too basic for you.

The metronome is one of our most important practice tools as a drummer, so if you're not already using it, you're missing out! It's going to help us develop solid timing, listening skills, and greater rhythmic accuracy. So, get ready to meet your metronome!

Hello Drummers! In this video lesson, we're going to be working with one of our most important practice tools: The metronome. The metronome is going to help us develop solid timing, listening skills, and more accurate rhythm interpretations.

A lot of beginners struggle to play in sync with the metronome, so I'm going to show you a couple of different exercises to help you get more comfortable.

First, we're going to do a rhythm pyramid where we play 2 bars of Quarter notes, 2 bars of Eighth notes, 2 bars of a combo rhythm, which is actually two 16ths and an 8th, and then finally, 2 bars of 16th notes. Let's put the metronome at 70 beats per minute, I’ll show you what that’s going to sound like.

And you can also do triplets for that third step of the rhythm pyramid.

So next we’re actually going to do a different type of rhythm pyramid where we slowly introduce a new group of 8th notes every two bars. So I’m going to take you through that exercise as well.

And you can also do the same thing with the 16th notes. Let’s turn the metronome back on, and check that out.

I hope this lesson has helped you get a better handle on playing and practicing with the metronome. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below, and of course, like and subscribe. That's all for now, thanks for watching!
